This Is My Voice

This Is My Voice is a candid, online conversation among five people with dementia from across the USA and UK. Responding to the question, “What is it like to live with dementia?,” this group of strangers soon become friends as they find common ground through stories they share. You will be moved by their courage, their insight, and their humor.

This Is My Voice gives a face and a voice to early onset dementia and provides an educational experience that changes hearts and minds. This Is My Voice goes beyond the signs and symptoms of disease and reminds us that people with dementia are alive and eager to stay active in their own lives and the lives of their loved ones, as long as they are able.

The film gives voice to five people who know what is ahead and speak openly about their hope for their remaining years, while at the same time finding joy and laughter in the ups and downs of their present lives.

Our hope is that you will share This Is My Voice with as many groups as possible — people with dementia, caregivers, professionals, and community groups — by purchasing a download of the video.

Our Side of the Fence

In this To Whom I May Concern® video of the scripted reading of Our Side of the Fence, you are invited to join a group of people diagnosed with dementia on their side of the “fence” — the fence that divides them from the rest of society because of their diagnosis. While there, you will learn what it is like to live with the symptoms of dementia, and what the view of the world is like from “our side of the fence.” At the end, you will be able to walk out the gate back to your side, but you will carry with you the experience of those who can’t leave.

The play was created by Maureen Matthews, director of To Whom I May Concern®, in partnership with a wonderful, smart, and opinionated group of people living with the diagnosis of dementia: Jan Pitts (Oklahoma), Joe Potocny (California), John Sandblom (Iowa), and Sue Stephen (Victoria, BC). The play was produced with Laura Bowley of Mindset Centre for Living with Dementia.

The Real World of Alzheimer’s

This recording shows the first online performance of To Whom I May Concern, and was done in Google Hangouts with each cast member playing their part from their own computers. Cast members are from various locations in the USA. Stories were also gathered from this same group via meetings in Google Hangouts, email, and the telephone. During this play, the group create a blog called “The Real World of Alzheimer’s.”
